Eco-Battlers

Eco-Battlers

Here at Harvey Road School our children have created an action group they have called Eco-Battlers.  The aim of this group of children is to:

  • Encourage everyone within the school community to become environmentally aware
  • To educated children about environmental issues and the impact of global warming
  • To identify ways that children, parents and staff can work together to make a more environmentally sustainable future

In September, children from Year 1 to Year 6 can nominate themselves for election onto the Eco-Battler Group.  To be successful, children are required to write an manifesto and present this to the children in the class who will carry out a secret ballot to identify the two children who will represent the class views.   As you can imagine this is a highly competitive event and children work hard to succeed in this process.

As always this will be a very busy year and the Eco-Battlers have agreed some exciting projects that will be their focus for this academic year.

In October, the Eco-Battlers worked together with the school council to organise a Harvey Road School litter pick as part of the National Green Week. We were joined by parents and grandparents and went through Croxley woods collecting rubbish.
The local Parish Council kindly lent us the litter pickers and accompanied us on our litter pick.  We collected 8.4kg of litter!

Woodoaks Farm Eco Explorers Day October 2025

On 1st October, some of our Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 Eco Battlers represented our school at the Eco Explorers Day organised by Woodoaks Farm. There were about 15 local schools there and we were paired with Little Green School for our activities.

We had a tour of some of the farm fields which are rented out to farmers to put sheep and cattle in. Our guide showed us how they plant hedges and wild flowers around their fields to provide food and shelter for wildlife. We saw deer, red kites and other birds in the fields. We learnt about Biodiversity and how different wildlife need different habitats to provide them with food and homes.

The children thought about our own school grounds and some ways that we could improve them for the wildlife we have. We will take those ideas back to school and make a plan of things we’ll do over the coming year then come back to Woodoaks Farm in July and show what we have done.

The children made a ‘Wild Child’ using natural materials collected on the farm.

If you visit Woodoaks Farm, see if you can spot our flags which are part of their Community Display. The children printed designs on them using paint and different autumn leaves.
